STANDING ON BUSINESS IN RED HEELS: WHY REIGNS’ “HEELS RUNNING” VIDEO JUST FORECLOSED ON POP

REIGNS is a United Kingdom-based soul and pop singer-songwriter whose strong vocals, unafraid songwriting, and cinematic production have earned her a large online following. REIGNS showed her best on July 24th with the video for “Heels Running.” Let’s delve into this magical world that Reigns has created for us

From the opening shot, the visual story draws us in with an amazingly tense, quiet environment, defined by a haunting, serene keyboard tune that instantly mesmerizes the viewer’s soul. We are introduced to our awe-inspiring heroine, dressed in all her wedding finery, set against the harsh contrasts of a dark tunnel. It is an amazing visual representation that could be achieved only by a woman with her amazing visual sense. As she makes eye contact with the camera, giving a powerful performance filled with charisma, she becomes surrounded by her team of dancers. These dancers turn into a whirl of movements and unspoken whispers as they mouth their words in a kind of mad chorus. After the exhilaration of the chase, the vocabulary of images moves into liberation and electricity. In the widening of the frames to the exuberant collective of drag performers wearing large shoes and high fashion costumes, the desperate escape fades into high fashion defiance. The concrete tunnel/pavement is no longer an area of flight but is now hallowed ground where nobody looks back. They turn into a whirlwind of movement and inaudible murmurs, their lips moving in an utter chaos of soundless harmony, which emphasizes in an incredibly effective manner the silence of her storming solo performance. It is at this point that the composition through the camera changes to something truly iconic. We see her owning the pavement like it is her own runway, her team following her like warriors behind, but then it all falls apart and turns into an intense chase. Even with her own friends pursuing her in an intense rush, she is still the only center of attention. It is absolutely incredible how she is still able to control the camera even when she is running, flawlessly delivering her moves with sheer elegance as the chaotic scene unfolds right around her. What a piece of work! The film comes to its stunning climax with the help of a truly amazing power strut move, one which exudes absolute confidence. In the end, we are treated to an equally brilliant finale with a wonderful close-up shot of her beautiful legs as she runs towards freedom clad in those red high heels.

The brilliance in the use of this visual thesis lies in how the story of the halted altar is reclaimed by her in such an aggressive way. While she doesn’t give in to the cliché of crying and bawling after her death, she sees the exit in her life as that moment when oxygen rushes back into her lungs. The steps that she takes away from that trap are not signs of cowardice but those of self-preservation. And once those intimidating, unabashed titans of drag appear on screen, she blasts the walls off the song by turning a battered love story into a liberation theology. The red heels no longer come across as mere indicators of precarious balance but as artillery propelling her forward with unchallenged authority. Being a witness to her entering that glorious, chosen family circle is not just a climax in itself; it’s like an X-ray proving that losing your fake skin is all it takes to get through to that particular sanctuary where worship is the proper thing to do. Distorting “you’re going to make the biggest mistake of your life” is more than just production technique; it’s a veiled warning through a velvet glove—distorted, like a voice breaking through the megaphone or memories looping one minute before you decide to trust yourself.

Using an open casting call for drag performers with only two criteria- be unapologetically yourself and wear your best heels- wasn’t just about background actors; this was about picking the cabinet members for a revolution. Not only did she not pick any extras, but she picked a reflection of what true allegiance is supposed to look like: performers who knew how to practice the highest form of survival by being in the wrong room and looking devastating while leaving it. By the time the chorus comes, this song has stopped feeling like music and started feeling like the excuse for all those times you should have left. World-building masterclass, for real.

From the deceiving soulful piano quietness to the unexpected lurch from the shuffling beat that grabs you by the neck, “Heels Running” isn’t just an opening; it’s a pounce. Melodies of strings wrap around like wires as the sounds of the brass blare out like warning lights, creating a pop melody that is as infectious as it is cutting. Before long, you realize that you’ve been set up in a trapdoor with the chanting harmonies that stack up and hook that just digs deeper with each repetition. And that ’90s-themed string-laden outro? Absolute archive nostalgia in the guise of futurism. Seamlessly switching between cutting edges and silky smoothness, Reigns sings vocal runs that leave lasting bruises on the airwaves.

This is more than just a song for the end of a relationship; it’s a letter of eviction to all things mundane, a densely written maze peppered with Easter eggs. She wasn’t just standing on her business; she seized the whole block. This may have been the wrong way to approach this playbook, but I’m now forever initiated because being able to witness an auteur operate at such dizzying heights is downright terrifying. Miss Reigns, I was not familiar with your game, but now I am, and I cannot wait to hear more of your music!
