Greetings dearest gentle readers and music fans, Let’s welcome the American duo SUPER SAIYAN JAY AND KING DEV. SUPER SAIYAN JAY and KING DEV are a duo I’m familiar with after hearing their album “Combination 2”. The album showcased the duo’s unmatched talent and artistry. On 9th August, the duo released a five-track EP called “Jersey Girls”. As two Florida-based musicians, their goal was to take the Jersey Club sound and give it their own unique artistic and vocal interpretation.
The EP’s first song is called “Dirty Diana”. The song opens with an electrifying sound that will hit you with its ferocity. The song introduces a character who has seen a lady that he is enamored with and tries to woo her(”understand that you’re my type”). Now the term dirty Diana was coined by the legendary King of Pop Michael Jackson. As Jackson himself said, the term did not refer to the demure Princess Diana but was a term to describe girls who hang around artists after they perform or groupies (”posing for the camera she dirty Diana”). This line alone is a testament to the duo’s creative depth and their lyrical prowess. The song is exciting with its beat, punch lines, and double-entendre lyrics. This song tells you the line that this EP is going to tow
Next is the song “Back to the Crib”. The intro of this song is some slow instrumentals before a beat is added to it. So this song describes a persona who has been approached by a beautiful lady who has heard of his exploits in bed and asks him if he can deliver or live up to the hype to which he answers her that they should go back to his place so she can see for herself(”we can go back to the crib”). I appreciate and applaud the duo for talking about intimacy using sexual innuendos. The song is foot tapping song and a song you can dance to alone or with friends and create a club situation no matter where you are
“Put Love First” is the title of the next song. The song begins with slow piano notes and soft-toned mouth percussions. The song presents to listeners a persona who is always the optimistic person who is very tough(” You never let it get you down”). We then learn that the persona always chooses love above everything (”they can never get you down you gon always put love first”). The song describes the resiliency of humans, and the beauty of independence and it is very entertaining and enjoyable
Next is the song “Jersey Girl”. This song has an intro too thrilling to ignore and there and then you know this song is going to be an absolute banger. The song talks about a powerful, independent, and unproblematic woman whom a character in the song is in awe of(”infatuated with you, all the things that you do, Jersey girl come through”). This is a song that celebrates women through and through, our beauty, strength, and undeniable charm. The rap verses are very exciting and they will take you on such an unforgettable musical ride
The last song on the EP is called “Beautiful Soul”. The song’s intro will get you curious to hear what the rest of the song is going to be like. The song shows listeners a character who is a lovesick man, a man in a loving relationship (”beautiful soul, not letting her go, she keeping me afloat”). This character is not only in love with her for her physical qualities but for her soul, he really sees her and she has got him doing things he never thought he would ever do. Don’t be fooled into thinking that rap verses are not emotive. This song is living proof that rap songs have souls and can be very emotive. The song will delight you and will linger on in your head after the song has ended and it brings the EP to an end
I have been impressed again by SUPER SAIYAN JAY AND KING DEV. There were times when I thought I was listening to a Bryson Tiller song. The album is a celebration of feminity and women, the album doesn’t see women as just objects of desire and sexiness but it truly will make women feel seen because through this album we learn that women are not one dimensional and I applaud the duo for this. Musically they were off the chain!, giving bar after bar and heavy punchlines. This duo is extremely talented and I can’t wait to hear what they release next
