“Time Changes Everything” comes from Katya Redpath, the singer-songwriter’s latest album, but not even remotely an effort by an artist still testing her feet in the waters of artistry. Rather, this collection of nine songs is a shining example of a unique blend of the life experiences of extensive travel, family heritage, academic interests, and cultural immersion of years gone by. “Time Changes Everything” was released on September 4th, and it is a beautiful illustration of how it takes many years for true mastery to develop. Let’s talk about it.
“Time Changes Everything” is the first album released by Katya Redpath and takes listeners on an extraordinary journey through folk blues, roots, Americana, and world influences. Avoiding all clichés, Time Changes Everything explores the depths of the human experience with incredible curiosity and lyrically intense songs. The album opens with “WAKE UP” and features a lively piano melody playing in an erratic manner until suddenly dropping down to a steady bass drum beat. Unlike many tracks that feature a gradual building of sound at the beginning of the song, “WAKE UP” begins halfway through, with the lyrics sung urgently and almost screaming to be heard. From a lyrical standpoint, “WAKE UP” is an existential song meant to make the listener question their complacent existence. The character in the song has realized that someone he or she cares about has become a puppet, not having original thoughts, and living life by reading someone else’s teleprompter. She tells this person to wake up and realize that the only way to do life properly is to be yourself. This desperate plea is exactly the wake-up call that we all need. In terms of his vocals, Redpath gives an almost unfiltered and conversational vocal performance, which starts out as a raspy whisper and becomes an impassioned cry supported by a crying piano melody and a drumming sound of brushes on snare drums. This song leaves an instantly captivating impression, setting up the mood of an awakening.
As the music enters ” Edge of Time”, there is a slow progression from a bass guitar to a lovely samba-infused drum beat that brings out the surreal feeling of being at the edge, whether it be in real terms or symbolic. The lyrics are all about that fine balance of releasing the past and moving forward without knowing what the future holds. This song talks about how human bonds are affected by changing times. The edge of town here doesn’t only mean the literal edge of town, but it also signifies a place that begins a revolution, a big step to effect change. The beauty of the song is captured in its unique vocal harmony, with Redpath’s voice creating a dual dialogue-like effect that is supported by a sparse upright bass and pedal steel sounds.
The slow progression of a synth-pop melody and swinging chord sequence from the upbeat guitar melody immediately dispels any traces of gravity, as the song “Hot Mess” begins with an unabashed stomp and a comical sound of plucked banjo notes. The song theme centers on self-deprecation and jokes, praising the beauty of being imperfect, making mistakes, and living an extraordinary and peculiar life that defies conventions. This type of differentiation is encouraged for the character, telling him or her to live life without worrying about what people are going to say. In this case, Redpath uses a theatrical singing style, uttering words with fast pronunciation and a soulful touch, complemented by the honky-tonk piano, clapping rhythms, and chugging guitar. It is a highly infectious song that brings a cathartic feeling.
“Zanzibar” begins with an intoxicating and ambient sound of a Latin-infused electric guitar melody, distant waves of the sea, a solo, and a fascinating, syncopated acoustic rhythm, instantly taking you to the other side of the world. In terms of lyrics, the narrative of Zanzibar tells a fascinating story of the sense of wandering, distance, and the deeply rooted human need to break free from the known world and go beyond for self-renewal, spiritually and geographically. As for the vocals of Redpath, she is inclined towards the use of a deep and hypnotic tone, allowing her words to blend perfectly with complex finger-picking of acoustic guitars and deep basslines.
Opening with an alternating sequence of soft piano melody that feels like it’s in an intimate setting. “Put It In A Song” starts with a storytelling attitude. The lyrics are about the transformation process where the artist is trying to channel and heal his suffering, lost love, and ecstatic joy by turning it into musical sounds and poetic lyrics. This song also talks about persevering and knowing that we can overcome anything we set our minds to. Redpath sings extremely vulnerably in this track; his upper-range voice has slight cracks in it before he opens up to beautiful, resonant vocals. The instrumental part of the song is kept very organic and is based on the acoustic guitar sound and the cello strings along with the heartbeat bassline.
The mood changes drastically in “Wave”, as the song opens with a thick cloud of atmospheric electric guitar feedback, slowly building up like a tidal wave before collapsing into a deliberate blues rock tempo. The lyrics in the song employ the repetitive crash of ocean waves to symbolize the grief, exhaustion, and resilience that is needed to get through tough times. It is a song that preaches resiliency and facing our challenges head-on. Here, surfing it right out means making sure to face any challenges in our lives. The vocals are a great demonstration of controlled intensity as they begin in a low blues moan before building to a ferocious howl which grabs your full attention. Accompanied by the sound of weeping electric guitar notes and an ominous rhythm section, this track knocks you off your feet with its emotional validation.
“Phoenix” begins with an angelic mixture of violin and piano melody. When the vocals start, you will get goosebumps because of how the intro is sung. The topic of the song revolves around radical rebirth, personal resurrection, and the difficult but inevitable necessity to destroy old self-images to be resurrected from the ashes. The artist infuses emotion into her performance, combining a rough narrative style characteristic of folk music with conviction of a gospel singer to turn the track into an anthem of survival. There is a grandiose musical arrangement consisting of strong percussion, whirling organs, and stringed music.
When one strips away the drama, “So Easy” begins with the sweet tones of a bright ukulele and whistling sound, which evokes a cool morning breeze. The song’s lyrics reflect a peaceful meditation on love and affection without any conflict or complications. The character in the song tells us how she has found a person who makes her life easy. It’s nice to find a person who makes loving them very easy. Redpath sings softly and with honeyed tones that ooze warmth, eschewing the grittiness that characterizes her previous album and choosing to croon into the microphone as if singing across the kitchen table to someone special. With a supporting melodic mandolin line and warm bassline, the song envelopes the listener in a cozy cocoon of calmness and clarity.
The album finishes with “Sueño De Samba”. The song begins with the clear sound of a shaker, followed by an introduction of classical guitar with nylon strings. Playing around the syncopated Latin folk beat, it serves as a bridge connecting all the songs lyrically by their focus on dreams, ancestry, and subconscious scenery where a whole life of experience and travel is finally at rest. Redpath performs in whispers and in a mesmerizing way. Her voice flows smoothly and blends harmoniously with the guitar runs and sultry percussion background. It leaves a listener in a trance.
Katya Redpath has presented to the world a true lesson in modern roots music with her album Time Changes Everything, which can only be described as a stunning masterpiece that flawlessly combines various genres such as Americana, folk, blues, and others uniquely. It was co-produced by Matt Smith in Austin’s famous 6-String Ranch, where Katya played most of the instruments herself, showing her incredible multi-instrumental skills. Listening to her music, it is impossible not to realize how lucky we are to witness the growth of such an amazing artist as Katya from the very beginning of her career.
Though each song on this album is itself a precious gemstone, four songs in particular have to be considered towering works of art as prisms through which we can see the dazzling brilliance of her artistic soul. The catchy, upbeat “Hot Mess” is a display of her witty self-awareness and rebellious, foot-stomping attitude expressed through a playful cynical, and cheeky banjo-based song that will make anyone feel like smiling through the most beautiful chaos of life. Moving ahead, we can enjoy the deep vulnerability of “Put It in a Song,” which becomes her personal healing auditory space as she turns her pain into poetry over the pulsing heartbeat of bass. Then we witness the breathtaking power of “The Phoenix,” her anthemic masterpiece that is a testimony to her radical transformation and survival, building up from the chilling whispers of a cappella to a full-blown symphony of defiance.
Lastly, the overwhelming trip comes full circle and ends up right back at the mesmerizing and contemplative moment of “Wake Up,” a song that will make your skin crawl and make you feel as though you have been electrified by her urgent cadence and challenging queries concerning the search for truth and independence. Through these tracks, she showcases not only her versatility but also an artist working at the pinnacle of her abilities through the creation of music that will linger in your bones.
What a remarkable and awe-inspiring tribute to the life of an individual who is in tune with music! Being aware of the fact that Time Changes Everything is the artist’s first album released after many years of hard work, traveling all around the world, and accumulating experience from the sounds of classical, rock, folk, blues, and Americana is what makes this experience all the more powerful. It is exactly this wisdom, which is only attainable through years of living and observing the world and telling the stories that made it into an album, that makes the whole experience so emotional. This is not the result of an artist trying to capitalize on a passing trend; it is the awe-inspiring product of years of artistic development, an art trove opened up to reveal lessons learned in the art of contemporary storytelling through roots music. When an artist invests a life’s worth of soul, strength and global insight into their work, the end result is not simply a listenable album but rather a reorganizing of one’s internal world. It is my great honor to present Katya Redpath and her beautiful voice; she is a gift who has created something which will be enjoyed and celebrated for many years to come.
