ROB FLETCHER’S “HELLS GATE”: A MASTERCLASS IN AUSTRALIANA ALT ROCK MAGIC

On one hand, some musicians simply put out songs, and then there is Rob Fletcher,  a unique artist who is paving his way with absolute dedication right from Wonthaggi, Australia. With his prolific and authentic nature, Fletcher has carved an array of work that stands for sheer brilliance that is becoming increasingly rare to come across nowadays. On June 7th, he surprised us all with “Hell’s Gate,” and if you haven’t already enjoyed the beauty of the song yet, then it means you are losing out on the best songwriting around. Let’s get a bit closer and discover the magic of the song through its lyrics.

The piece starts out feeling much like a sunrise, slowly building up momentum, with a melodic electric guitar line that is at once icy and sparkling, and which captures your attention even before a stunning vocal performance takes control of you from the very beginning. There is a sense of unfiltered passion and intensity just from these first few moments, something that will prove that you have fallen into the capable hands of a true master of his craft.

The essence of “Hell’s Gate” resides within the wide and daunting expanses of the outback of New South Wales. This essence is formed during one particular and breathtaking moment in which pure terror and fascination intersected. Imagine the following: Fletcher driving the enormous Kenworth B-double truck and passing through endless feedlots beneath the huge, indifferent sky. In this confined and desolate environment, the engine turned into a symbol of something far more serious than a mere engine. One is to experience this peculiar and frightening epiphany that the biggest and hardest-to-accept facts of life cannot be left behind or outrun. Death is an unavoidable fate awaiting every human being ever born into this world. However, rather than sinking into despair or rushing frantically and exhausting themselves in a mad race against time, Fletcher transforms this deep contemplation into a call to radical grace. “Hells Gate” delicately lifts the veil on our deepest fears and whispers that the solution to our deepest despair lies not in fleeing, but in surrendering. We must learn to make peace with the inevitability of the end and be brave enough to embrace the beauty of mortality. Once we stop fleeing from our destiny, the world becomes clear and colorful, and we find ourselves able to live fully. In the end, it reminds us that we should embrace the warmth of the present, love our people with fierce and unwavering passion, and go down in history with absolute dignity and grace.

The sonic structure of “Hells Gate” is nothing less than an exemplary case of atmosphere built on a foundation of rich ping pong delay and stereo guitar effects dissolving seamlessly into the mist of hypnagogic vocals. Behind the facade of the sound sits the stroke of brilliance that is a simple yet effective intro created around a sampled guitar effect with a rich distortion and bend in pitch that catches the listener right from the start and plunges him/her into the sound world. In fact, Rob has quite modestly called his creation nothing but “magic, music,” and truly no truer words have ever been said before. The longtime fans and newbies are already charmed by the song’s atmosphere and return to it time after time, as it reaches the depths of their souls by providing what is called authentic Australian alternative rock with substance.

With over 450 original tracks available on his SoundCloud, Rob Fletcher personifies the DIY musician in its purest form, having written, recorded, and produced his music all alone in his unique and fiercely independent way. He creates music in the rarest and holiest realm where the deep emotions conveyed by Jeff Buckley meet the sun-soaked alternative rock style of Icehouse, creating a unique genre which he describes as “Australiana alt rock.” All the way he went in making music, he earned himself a lot of respect; respect for the holy process of creating something artistic, respect for the long journey he took, and respect for the human experience which his lyrics convey. Because his entire recording world is solely his, he has complete artistic license to create a sonic world where bleeding-heart emotion is intertwined with bold sonic exploration. Finding a musician such as this is like uncovering a valuable gem, and I am eternally thankful for the chance to encounter his music. I could not be prouder to consider myself one of his fans, and my heart is already beating in anticipation of what musical treasure he will bestow upon us next.
