Now, we have the unique opportunity to introduce our audience to one of the most gifted Danish composers, producers, and musicians, Nils Lassen. His outstanding career spans a wide range of fields, including scoring for movies, avant-garde sounds, and emotional songwriting. On the 15th of May, he unveiled a new hypnotizing single called “Under Your Spell”, which deserves our undivided attention. Let’s dive deeper into the subtle architecture and arresting imagery of this magnificent release.
The song begins with a breath, a gentle and delicate construction of sounds produced by the mouth, and some faint ad-libs that immediately clear out any interference created by the external environment. This serves as a mesmerizing spell that creates an air of tension right at the very beginning, even before the intensity of the voice starts to hit hard. It is such a delicate introduction that it captured all of my attention and dragged me into the zone where I was lost to the extent that there can be no doubt that any fan of such music would be equally fascinated.
“Under Your Spell” looks at the addictive nature of love from a totally different perspective. Instead of cloaking the story in the saccharine romance genre, the narrator presents his relationship as existential confinement, one where he is truly under a spell. This is not just a matter of artistic exaggeration. In fact, in this case, the poetic elements clearly show how this character can no longer differentiate between heaven and hell. Losing yourself in someone else to such an extent that you lose all sense of right and wrong is not usually a sign of a sound relationship, but again, I digress. The real beauty of the song is that there are both perspectives on the situation. While one hears the warning behind the song about the destructive nature of such an overwhelming and blinding love, the other side sees through the obvious message and fantasizes about the intensity of the experience. It describes the wonderful horror of being completely taken over by your lover to the point where everything around becomes insignificant, and you simply float in blissful oblivion.
Lassen’s incredible knack for seamlessly blending different styles together through raw emotions makes him one-of-a-kind within the world of music. With such unique skills, he goes ahead and creates sounds that have the potential of captivating millions of people all over the world. I loved diving into this piece since the emotions within it were simply amazing, especially the incredible ability it had to balance between devotion and obsession so perfectly. Discovering Lassen and his entire repertoire is just like stumbling upon something that should be kept secret. As someone who loves his work already, it’s now with great excitement that I await his next creation.
