We are honored and excited to bring back on our pages the indie-rock band known as Reetoxa, a creation that comes only through the pure stubbornness of its singer/songwriter, Jason McKee. Almost three decades have been spent by McKee guarding his artistic flame, pouring the most private moments of his life into songwriting before anyone heard about them. It took a stroke of luck for him to team up with the talented producer, Simon Moro, an ARIA nominee whose collaboration with McKee gave the world “War Killer”, a work of genius that shows just how important persistence in creation is. Now, after turning a new page, we see how the band has presented to us another great piece titled “The Lisa Song.” We are glad to take a look behind the curtains of this amazing track right now.
As soon as this piece begins, it introduces itself through a mid-tempo groove that is perfect in every sense. Almost immediately, it is followed by a vocal part that draws listeners in with such magnetism and ease that no effort needs to be put into it. Something about the way the voice introduces itself to the audience is extremely warm and captivating, making the audience feel as if they’ve met a real person and not some machine that was programmed for the task.
To say that one is analyzing the theme of “The Lisa Song” means one is unraveling the backstory of Reetoxa as well as the inspiration for Jason McKee’s music. Everything started from a Spiderbait concert at the Forum Theatre in Melbourne, where Jason had the chance to get two exclusive VIP booth passes; however, he was left without a companion because his date stood him up. Determined to take advantage of his tickets by getting his share of the VIP merchandise, he still went ahead. But fate had a completely different agenda with regard to music selection. Sitting opposite him was a beautiful blonde called Lisa who exuded charisma in her sleek power suit and bright smile with adorable dimples. Just when he was lifting the camera to take a picture of the stage performance, Lisa suddenly entered the camera angle, smiling and waving. And at that precise split second, her head was illuminated in the glare of the stage light, creating a beautiful halo effect around her face, which seemed lit up by the sun itself. This single cinematic shot drove Jason’s imagination absolutely crazy. He found himself completely obsessed with the urge to grab hold of the lightning in a bottle right then and compose a song in front of this crazily cheering crowd. Noticing the magic going on, Lisa started flirting with him, inevitably throwing at him the question, “So what is your job?” Feeling extremely vulnerable, Jason got a little embarrassed about admitting that he was a university student working towards a music arts degree and a mediocre musician. But then, not giving up, Lisa told Jason that she wanted to listen to some of his songs, causing Jason to hurriedly search among the unedited voice recordings on his phone and share his soul.
But behind the scenes, the production of “The Lisa Song” is infused with the meaning and symbolism of an epiphany that would change Jason’s life forever. That small, intense meeting with Lisa is what finally gave him the push he needed to make that all-important phone call to producer Simon Moro and record his debut album. As they talked at the show, listening to the last songs playing from the speakers, Lisa turned to Jason and said, “Sorry, but I have to dance to this song.” And she faded away into the crowd. As soon as the music finished playing, Jason headed backstage to secure his cherished vinyl set for the autograph of Spiderbait’s frontman, Kram. By the time Jason had reached for his autographed set, Lisa had disappeared into the Melbourne night. However, her presence stayed with Jason creatively. On his way back from the venue to his Southbank apartment, the realization of pure inspiration fell upon him in its entirety; the time to take action had come. He made up his mind to leave the university. Up until today, all attempts at finding her have been unsuccessful. For all intents and purposes, she is an elusive apparition in the Forum Theatre, an angel who made one-night stopovers just to change the course of someone’s life. Now that the song is forever etched in music history through its recording in the best production in the studio, Jason continues to watch out for her in every live performance that he has attended, hoping that the song will lead her right back to the front row.
After listening to this song, you will definitely experience a heartwarming sensation of warmth and happiness in your soul, and a smile will surely adorn your face. While it’s always sad to know that things did not work out between them, one must recognize the inherent poetry and beauty behind this imperfection. This is the real essence of human life, that of being gifted with such electrifying moments that cannot lead to any traditional story of love, yet have the ability to change the course of our lives completely. It’s once again crystal clear from this song by Reetoxa that they are indeed a force to be reckoned with in the music industry. Listening to this musical ride on the tracks feels like pure delight and ecstasy, and as the song comes to a close, the listener ends up grateful and longing for more.
