RAW AUTHENTICITY: INSIDE THE VIBRANT SONIC SANCTUARY OF THE WHEEL WORKERS’ “LIVE FROM THE ATTIC”

No Comments Music

Coming straight from the very state of Texas, the indie rock band referred to as The Wheel Workers. It should be mentioned that the very essence of the alchemy of the music created by The Wheel Workers consists in the composition of this line-up, which includes the founder and vocalist Steve Higginbotham. Indeed, the multi-instrumentalist Higginbotham not only leads the band but also performs on various instruments, including the guitar, keyboard, and violin. This musician is joined by guitarist and keyboardist Craig Wilkins and keyboardist and vocalist Erin Rogers. The rhythm section of this indie rock band is created by Zeek Garcia, who plays bass guitar, and Kevin Radomski, who plays the drums.  This band gives to you their new EP, “Live from the Attic”, which is unique in its essence since it captures a truly genuine atmosphere of a band playing in harmony. This release will be available starting from April 10th, and what makes it special is the fact that the songs are absolutely natural, free from any artifices usually created during the process of creating music in a studio environment. Let’s explore this EP, track by track.

The adventure starts from “Fine Time (Live”,  whose introduction starts with some feedback sounds, a countdown from 2 to 4 and  a harsh and noisy guitar line that looks purposefully restless and somehow distorted. The fuzzy sound creates an uneasy feeling for the listener prior to being hit by drums that create the atmosphere of grounded and strong rhythm. In terms of lyrics, the song provides a biting social commentary of power structures and the burden of conflicts. This song highlights the manner by which truth becomes a casualty of power. The song refers to the innocent and the poor who die in such conflicts. Musically, this song tells the story about power structures and the burden of confrontation, showing how the truth can be betrayed under pressure of power. The vocals are aggressive, yet catchy and piercing, emerging through an orchestra of instruments where the cymbals produce a splash in the darkness of a room.

Moving into a more trance-like territory, “Smokescreen (Live)” begins with an intriguing combination of a pulsating sound from a synthesizer and guitar strokes. The main theme of the song is focused around masks that people wear and the many levels of lies, both external and internal, that hide true reality from us. It’s the theme of finding one’s own truth within a society where everything presented is just staged. This track is all about the harmony of keys and bassline, which create an atmosphere of swirling melodies and textures. The melody is more prominent in terms of vocals, sounding somewhat like a person who lost himself somewhere in the fog but who can be brought back by the drumbeat.

“Rainbows (Live)” brings a breath of refreshing energy through a lively, drum beat and mouth percussion followed by the sparkling guitar tune that immediately uplifts your spirits. Although the sound is cheerful, the underlying message of the track deals with fierce rebellion. It is an ode to self-love and acceptance in spite of others’ judgment. Going further into the meaning of the song, the song seems to be talking about lgbtqia+ relationships which are represented by the rainbow flag and faces backlash the most. To end the song powerfully, the character in the song emphasizes the fact that you cannot choose what or whom to love and asks the laws against his relationship to back off!. The track speaks about the bravery needed to lead a fulfilling life. Musically speaking, the track is very cohesive. It includes soaring vocal harmonies that add to the anthemic nature of the song. The instrumental arrangement features airy keyboards and a lively rhythm section that adds a welcoming vibe to the rebelliousness mentioned in the lyrics.

The EP ventures even further, going for something much more profound with “Desire (Live)”. It starts off with a delicate and minimalist approach with some nice and clear guitar lines along with some beautiful atmospheric synths. It takes time to build up because it helps in making the message of the theme come through, how our desires can be forgotten easily. The song is right, growing up and being an adult often sucks all imagination, whimsy and desires out of your life because, you need to do so many things but, the character in the song ends the song on a hopeful note; he won’t let go of his desires and I feel like this is the message to us listeners, to never let go of our desires. The lyrics touch on this and make the listener feel what the song is trying to convey. Musically, the track evolves from a fragile state to a strong anthem. The vocals are especially remarkable in this track as they start off as whispers and end with an intense belt.

This set concludes with Day After Day (Live). The song starts off with an intense drumbeat and guitar melody which implies that the action is inevitable and unstoppable. This track talks about survival and recovery after something bad and destructive has happened. In this song it seems to be a romantic relationship where the character is weaning himself out of love little by little. This song is dedicated to anyone who has had to rebuild himself piece by piece, whether from a romantic relationship or from any other struggle. Musically, there is no rest, but rather constant movement which creates a very energetic mood of this composition. Vocals in this song sound very convincing and real implying a lot of life experience. And only after listening to all the words, you become sure that there can be no more problems after such strong willpower has been shown.

With their latest project entitled Live from the Attic, The Wheel Workers present to us an inside look at their music-making journey. Recorded right in their Houston studio, where all their songs get their start, the EP resonates with the authentic and direct energy that emanates only when artists are truly “in the room.” This is not just any musical project but an experience that serves as a gateway to their forthcoming album entitled One More Thing to Say, which is due out in October 2026. Through including a YouTube video with each song, the band takes down the veil and gives fans an honest glimpse of their growth. This EP seems to be so incredibly meaningful, at the same time so incredibly entertaining, that it leaves its imprint in one’s spirit even after the very last sounds have faded away. This EP is not easy to come by, since it combines sincerity and explosiveness perfectly together in sound. I can’t praise this band enough, both to my devoted readers and to those listeners, who seek some powerful and sincere sound in their music. Listen to this EP attentively and change your mind about everything!
