In the serene tranquility of Gjern, Denmark, where the cool whispers of the wind dance among the old trees and time seems to stand still, Wingfish has been slowly constructing their own world since 2002. From the distinctive beat of Jesper Larsen on the voice and guitar, the deep, bass foundation of Michael Fischerson on the bass guitar, the powerfully intuitive pounding of Allan Østerdahl on the drums, and the complex finger work of Peter Amby on the guitars, the band has been doing much more than simply playing music—it has been living it. And when they unleashed their ten-track opus, “Dyads”, on November 30th, they didn’t simply release an album; they gave us the guide to their shared soul.
A trip through WINGFISH’s 10-track album Dyads starts with a song called “Gentle Ally”. The song opens up with an epic wash of gentle, subdued acoustic guitar and a consistent rhythm pattern, which gives a feeling of wide-open spaces long before anything has even been said lyrically. Lyrically speaking, the song starts right into the deep personal process of being displaced and trying to find yourself within those emotions, with Jesper’s weathered first line, “I’ve been speaking in tongues,” setting a tone of searching for the truth beyond language. Musically speaking, it is supported by the massive rock architecture, in which delayed notes of guitar float freely alongside the bluesy vocals, creating the space that hits you right in the heart.
Beginning the album with the track “Sacred Place,” the song begins with a slow, droning bassline along with a phased guitar chord building up quiet tension before establishing a rhythmic groove. The lyricism is focused on exploring the sanctity of the human mind and the internal space created by us to protect our minds, dreams, and spirits from the chaos of the outside world, and how we all need that sacred place. The track builds on strong progressive rock elements, with long melodic guitar riffs and vocals that shift halfway through the song, creating an enveloping sound for the listener.
Injecting the list with an instant burst of energy, “Blown (2025 Version), immediately sets the tone with a massive, distorted guitar riff coupled with a driving, rhythmic drum pattern that comes straight to you with the essence of raw rock and roll. Thematically, the song is about sudden shifts in one’s life and the disorienting experience of having plans fall apart while trying to navigate the ruins. The character in the song tells us how he has somehow been blown in the wrong direction. From the perspective of music style, the 2025 remake of this song is a lesson in intense rock and roll music, blending aggressive guitar riffs with spacious and airy bridge sections where listeners can infuse their own emotions into the track.
As the first entry into the live album anthology, “I Know Everything (Live 24)” begins with the background buzz of a sharp and powerful guitar riff and a driving drum fill. The theme revolves around the trap of having too much knowledge and how trying to know everything results in extreme isolation and a desire to forget everything. On the musical side, the guitar melody brings intense, explosive energy to the performance, with dirty vocals and precise, tight rhythm sections pulling the listener directly into the center of the sweaty club floor where they can feel the dynamic energy of the band at work.
The energy from sweat dripping off is captured in “100 Ways To Go (Live 24)” with the opening rhythmical and cascading guitar arpeggio and pounding snare drum sound. In this song, we meet a character whose heart has been torn apart and then accepts that the relationship is over, and it’s now survival of the fittest. Musically, the song impresses with complicated melodic phrasing and an amazing guitar solo that appears beyond the three-minute mark and dominates the senses and makes people pump their fists in triumph.
Moving into a more introspective mood, “If You Say So (Live 24)” opens with the plaintive bending of a single guitar string and a deep drum sound effect that reverberates through the live venue. The lyrics take a look at the delicate fragility of submitting oneself to another person’s point of view in order to maintain harmony after having a fight in which neither party really won. The character in the song wants to fight for the relationship, but his partner does not, so he tells her that he’s giving up the fight because she says so. The song utilizes large spaces and a soft voice that seems weary from all the years of life experience, using the natural acoustics of the venue to surround the listener in a late-night blues mood.
Going even deeper into the gloom, “Someone Else (Live 24)” starts off with a muffled beat with a heavy bassline and a slow but steady distorted guitar sound, creating an atmosphere that’s dark and suspenseful. Thematically, it is based on a story about the reality of being with someone who doesn’t fully give herself to you but to someone else. Musically, the gloomy and atmospheric alternative rock composition becomes highly charged with the passionate vocals and a driving rhythm that surrounds the listener.
Infusing a breath of classic rock revival, “Bad Seeds (Live 24)” opens up with a lively, fast-paced strum of an acoustic guitar paired perfectly with sharp notes from the electric guitar. At its lyrical heart, the song talks about a character who tried to take the easy street in life but instead got a bitter road. It’s the truth that life can be hard and bitter, and our character found that out the hard way. In terms of musical content, the song embraces the easy-going style of classic rock.
In revisiting a previous archival period, “How Long (Live 22)” kicks off with an open and reverberating guitar riff coupled with a rhythmic marching drum beat that exudes the rough charm associated with the trio’s early performance phase. Thematic content for the song revolves around the torment that is involved with the passage of time while waiting for something or someone; in essence, the psychological strain involved in thinking about a breakthrough or a reunion. With respect to the musical content, it focuses on the telepathic interaction between the rhythm section and the powerful vocal delivery.
The album culminates in a touching circle closure as “Gentle Ally (Live 22)” takes to the stage, starting off with a gritty guitar chord followed by a burst of the ambient venue sounds, echoing back to where the entire album originated. In terms of lyrics, this recorded live version seems to give an introspective outlook on the topics of companionship, searching, and musical development covered within the entire album. In terms of music, listening to the earlier recorded live version of the opener will help the listener realize all the small harmonic alterations, vocal changes, and song modifications that led the song to reach its studio version, thus making an impactful tribute to WINGFISH’s two-decade-long career.
Emerging from the vast landscapes of progressive and alternative rock music, there is a definite, eerie chemistry that can only be found in the work of artists such as Chris Cornell and Josh Homme, but is uniquely Jesper’s nonetheless. With Dyads, Wingfish has managed to accomplish what musicians can only dream about; they have captured the magic of their renowned live shows in a bottle. Combining their newest studio songs seamlessly with the pure electricity of their live tracks, this album is a lesson in sincerity and unadulterated musicality. Spending time with this album has been pure pleasure from the beginning to the end – hanging out with such a creative band is pure magic, and I cannot wait to see what they conjure up next.
