Jayd, a British independent musician residing in Luxembourg, has released her new single ‘Lucid Lover,’ a song about breakup. Jayd’s favourite lyric is, “It took me all this time to put my words in rhyme about you,” since she couldn’t or wouldn’t compose a song about her relationships until they were finished. MIRARI MORE, a London-based rapper, appears on the tune. Mirari was born in Lagos, Nigeria, and moved to London at the age of seven, transitioning from afrobeat and afro-funk to grime and UK garage. We can detect traces of both artists’ backgrounds in the collaboration as the tune takes on an old-school R&B vibe with indie electro swirls.
Her music is genuine and approachable, focusing on topics such as mental health and anxiety, as well as destructive relationships. “I am good at remembering stories people have told me and putting myself in someone’s shoes and writing from an honest place as if it were me living through it,” she admits. Her new single, “Lucid lover,” delves deeper into these themes, resulting in an authentic release with which listeners can connect on a personal level. Jayd’s music pulls you in from the first note, keeping you enthralled till the very end, with echoing instruments and rich harmonies and soundscapes. Jayd’s ever-evolving style is expected to make some waves in 2022, after receiving praise from BBC Introducing.
This sense of mystery and intense emotion is complemented by the music video. Jayd greets the spectator from a television set, placed against the backdrop of a wintery forest – far away, but also in the wilderness with you. The simplicity of the television set against the huge wilderness retains Jayd’s voice as the essential, compelling component of the video, even while it transports the spectator to an emotionally complicated location. ‘Lucid Lover’ is a full-bodied pop song with Jayd’s vocals combining with a great performance by London-based rapper Mirari More to produce a deep and genuinely catchy sound.
